Frozen Roller Shutters - Causes and Solutions

The winter period is more challenging than usual for our roller shutters, putting their quality to the test. 
One of the problems that influence the operation of roller shutters is their freezing.
It may be caused by weather conditions or inadequate ventilation of rooms where humidity is high.
We have no influence on the vagaries of the weather, temperature change, rainfall or snowfall, so roller shutters freeze independently from us.
In order to minimize the risk of roller shutters being blocked by frost, we should stick to a few simple rules:
- the backing of the roller shutter should not be covered with snow, or otherwise the lowered slats may stick to it
- it is not recommended to open windows in temperatures belowj 0oC when the roller shutter is lowered – this way we will avoid the phenomenon of water vapour condensing on cool slats
- in sub-zero temperatures, one ought not to clean the roller shutter with water, or otherwise the slats may freeze or even get damaged
- it is recommended to equip the roller shutter with a motor having the obstacle detection function – it turns off automatically when it encounters resistance and so minimizes the risk of damage
- the seal in the end slab should be covered with petroleum jelly or another chemical agent not containing water and resistant to frost.
A roller shutter blocked by frost may not function smoothly or emit strange sounds. Then we should not attempt to lower or raise the roller shutter by force, pulling the cord or overburdening the motor, or otherwise we may damage the roller shutter and the motor.
In such a case, we may try and unfreeze the icy spots with hot airflow, e.g. from a hair dryer.
